Cane Creek Canyon and Nature Preserve

If you're looking for some outdoor activities that also provides beautiful scenery, you'll have to check out Cane Creek Canyon. It's 700 acres of land established to preserve plants and animals native to the area. The land is privately-protected, but access is entirely free all year long. There are over 11 miles of hiking trails and guides for those who are looking for a great day out. The area is primarily used for day excursions, but there are occasional camping groups permitted to use the land.

Scenic Lake Cruises

For a way to explore the outdoors without the need for a trail map, Wheeler Lake Scenic Cruises offers guided tours to the public. The boat holds up to 24 passengers and travels along the lower section of Wheeler Lake and Lake Wilson. Passengers are encouraged to bring their own food and drink along for the ride, or they can dine at the Joe Wheeler Resort. Trips range from 1 to 8 hours, so you can make this a day's event. The boat has a covered roof for relief from the sun and a bathroom on-board. If you want to turn it into a romantic night out, there are sunset cruises available, just make sure to call ahead!

Odette Local Eatery

Odette embodies the modern farm to table dinner setting minus the pretension. The owner, Celeste Pillow, came up with the concept when she was looking for a restaurant that she would like to visit. Odette is an eatery and shop "serving elevated American fare with southern and international influences." All items found on the menu are locally and sustainably sourced and uniquely made. Resident Chef Quick prides himself on making amazing dishes that pair new flavors with traditional cooking methods. Reservations aren't required, but with their popularity, you should expect a way. There's a long bar if you want to get there early and grab a signature cocktail or two. View Odette's menu here.

College Street Farmers Market

The College Street Farmers Market is a truly organic way to buy meat and produce. Open from 4 pm on Thursdays; the market has strict rules about vendors and the products they sell. If they were not made, grown, or produced by the vendor, they are prohibited from selling it at their stall. It's a great way to ensure you are buying organic and supporting local businesses. Often, the market will also host musical guests. For more information about the vendors, make sure to check out their website.

George H. Carroll Lion Habitat

If you haven't already visited the lion habitat, it's a must. The University of North Alabama hosts the only live lion mascot in the country. Leo III and Una reside on the UNA campus in a 12,000 square-foot habitat. The tradition started forty years ago when former UNA president brought a 35-pound lion cub to act as the mascot for the school. The first Leo helped cheer the school to victory for over fourteen years before passing in 1988. The love for the wild animal was so great; the school decided to bring in Leo II to keep the spirit alive. Una and Leo III are exhibited seven days a week from 8-5pm, weather permitting. Viewing is free, but donations to help feed and shelter the two lions are always welcome!

Music Tour of the Shoals

If you are a music fan, you won't want to miss taking a tour of the recording studios in The Shoals area. These music studios have been producing hits since the 60's, and have seen famous faces like Elvis, W.C. Handy, and Sam Phillips stroll through their doors. The best place to start is with FAME Recording Studios located on Avalon Avenue. The studio is still churning out the hits today and was the place where Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, and Paul Anka got their start. After which, you'll want to hop on over to the next studio where Cher, Paul Simon, and The Rolling Stones recorded some of their biggest hits. The building itself is nondescript, but the tour is chalk full of history! There is also the Cypress Moon Studio and Alabama Music Hall of Fame. The famous names that have passed through these doors will never cease to impress you like Lionel Richie and Emmylou Harris. Each tour is separate and has their own hours, so you will need to plan in advance!
